New Years Day. 2015. College Football. Urban Meyer vs Nick Saban. Ohio St. vs Alabama. Can’t get much better than that, can it? For the first time in history there will be a College Football Playoff to decide the two teams in the BCS Championship Game. The number one seed Alabama will take on the fourth seed Ohio State. This matchup will be a great clash on the field but will be even better on the sidelines. Urban Meyer, coach of the Buckeyes has won two National Championships both with Florida in 2006 and 2008. Nick Saban, coach of the Crimson Tide is a well decorated coach with 4 National Championships. Three of them with Alabama in 2009, 2011, and 2012 and one with LSU in 2007. The Buckeyes will have their 3rd string QB in the game, Cardale Jones, after both Braxton Miller and J.T. Barrett went down with injuries. Jones’ inexperience could cost Ohio State in their biggest game against the heavily favored Alabama Crimson Tide.
The favorite to win the game, the Alabama Crimson Tide are a very strong team all around, especially their high speed, tough nosed offense which includes stars such as QB Blake Sims, WR Amari Cooper, and RB T.J. Yeldon. Cooper, a junior wide receiver is the most notable star in the game, most likely going in the top 5 of the NFL Draft and a strong candidate for Bilenikoff Award, the award going to the best WR in College Football. Cooper, will have to come to play and be a leader for the Crimson Tide if they want a shot at the title. The backs featured in the Crimson tide offense, T.J. Yeldon and Derrick Henry have combined for 20 touchdowns throughout the College Football season. Both backs will have to stick it to the Buckeyes’ defensive line featuring one of the best in the country, Joey Bosa, if they want to make it to the championship. The problem for Alabama could be their defense. Even though they are the best in the country, the Crimson Tide defense does not have much tape to study of Buckeyes’ Sophomore QB Cardale Jones. This could create big problems for the Alabama defense, because this way Ohio State will be able to run plays Alabama has not prepared for. The Crimson tide defense will also have to stop WR Devin Smith and RB Ezekiel Elliott. If Alabama can get the ball downfield and score on a good Buckeyes’ defense and stop shut down inexperienced QB Cardale Jones, they will win this game.
The huge underdog to win this game, the Ohio State Buckeyes are a very talented squad almost all around. The key for the Buckeyes to this game is to stop the Alabama offense, and that will be hard to do. Alabama has an 85% red-zone conversions which means when they are in the red zone they usually get points. The Buckeyes do have enough strength on defense including Sophomore DE Joey Bosa. Bosa led the team with 13½ sacks and is a star on the Buckeyes’ defensive squad. Ohio States’ defensive line is one of their strongest areas along with their offensive line. The Buckeyes will also have to outscore ‘Bama if they want to have a shot at the title. They have plenty of star power to do that including WR Devin Smith, a big-play threat who had 11 TDs this season and RB Ezekiel Elliott who didn’t get nearly enough credit for the Buckeyes success this season even though he finished off the season with a little more than 1,400 rushing yards. The Buckeyes have enough star power all around to pull off the upset but, they will have to play their best game of the season.
What will happen when two high speed, great-coached teams clash in the first ever College Football playoff? I don’t know, but what I do know is that it will be a game for the ages and a game you will definitely have to sit down and watch. Even though I am a huge Michigan fan, I think the Crimson Tide will underestimate the Buckeyes, and the Buckeyes will be able to take control of the game and Cardale Jones will be the star of the game making big plays left and right. In the biggest game of the year, the Ohio State Buckeyes will upset the Crimson Tide in a shootout and win by the score of 38-35. Happy New Year to everyone, let 2015 begin with a bang!
